Principal's Message

Welcome to May River High School!

May River just completed its second year serving the students in the Bluffton community.  Our mantra from the onset has been and continues to be “Tradition Starts Today.”  While we are proud of the “traditions” we have established, our work in creating the foundation for traditions is far from complete.

We have enjoyed many successes.  We saw fifty-one “completers” in Career and Technology Education in 2018, seven May River students were accepted into the Governor’s School, and we saw our second National Merit Scholar.  May River is in the top three in the county in all areas of end of course testing and leads the county by a wide margin in U.S. History.  Our students won the Academic World Quest and competed nationally.  Science Olympiad was second in the state.  Students in welding and automotive were 13th and 6th in national competition, respectively.  Our athletic program finished the year in 2nd place in the state Carlisle Cup standings, which measures overall competitiveness for all state high school athletic programs.  Our Performing Arts Department produced its first major production this Spring, with many more to come. The May River Band received its first ever Superior rating, dominated the “All County” band, had an “All State” representative, and won multiple marching events.

We have great plans moving forward.  In Advanced Placement, we continue to expand our offerings to seventeen courses to include the A.P. Capstone Program.  We entered into an agreement with USC-Beaufort to offer dual enrollment of May River Students in 2018-19.  We will continue to emphasize safety with formal training, and club/extra-curricular activities continue to expand.

May River holds incredible opportunities for those who choose to step from their comfort zone and embrace challenge.  I challenge our students to be a part not only of the rich academic opportunities, but in co-curricular activities as well.  Embrace our inclusive culture.  As members of a young school, “Tradition Starts Today” is a challenge to create a foundation for tomorrow.
