School Counseling

May River High School Counseling Department Mission

The mission of the May River High School Counseling Department is to focus on removing academic, social, emotional, and systemic barriers to advocate for all students to prepare to be responsible, culturally aware citizens and lifelong learners. We will accomplish this by providing and evaluating a proactive, comprehensive and developmental counseling program that impacts each student in the academic, career and social/emotional domains. Serving as student advocates, May River High School counselors unite all stakeholders to collaborate for the success of all students.

May River High School Counseling Department Philosophy

The counselors at May River High School believe:

  • All students can learn and we recognize they learn in different ways.
  • All students should be respected for their uniqueness.
  • All students have dignity and worth and the school and community must embrace diversity and promote the value of the individual.
  • All students should have access to the school counseling program.

The counselors at May River High School believe the comprehensive School Counseling Program should:

  • Incorporate specified goals and student competencies in the academic, career, and emotional/social domains provided by the American School Counselor Association, the South Carolina Department of Education, and Beaufort County School District.
  • Be data driven and systematically delivered focusing on prevention, intervention, and student developmental needs through guidance curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services, and system support.
  • Be planned in collaboration with all stakeholders in the school and community.
  • Encourage students’ understanding that they can be positive contributors to their community.
